So if you are a book worm you most likely would have heard of the fantastic novel by Ransom Riggs. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Telling a mysterious story of a boy who suffers great loss and follows clues to an abandoned orphanage on a Welsh Island which therefore leads on to great adventures!
Well, the fantastic and we may say strange minded Tim Burton decided to make this bestselling book into a film which was released at the end of September this year. Burton is famous for the well-known films, Edward Scissorhands and Alice in Wonderland.
Tim has gone all out with the cast too with some big Hollywood names! Placing Eva Green which you may have seen in the TV series, Penny Dreadful, play a very different character throughout the film as the main leading lady herself, Miss Peregrine. Within the famous names of cast is also Samuel L Jackson, Chris O’Dowd, Rupert Everett, Judi Dench and many more to complete the film!
Why would this appeal to me I hear you asking yourself? A local country bumpkin like me? Well, the best bit about the film is that it was filmed in the heart of Cornwall!
The majority of it was filmed at Caerhayes Estate at St Austell. The cast and crew also made good use of the surrounding cliffs, beaches and unspoilt landscape of the beautiful Cornwall countryside. The producers had searched all over the coast line and when they came across the Caerhayes Estate stated it would be ‘perfect’ for the abandoned orphanage. The filming was kept well-guarded secret by the studio however the residents of the tiny estate village of East Portholland and at nearby Porthluney Cove were part of the secret, due to many of them being involved in the filming themselves.
I find this absolutely fantastic for Cornwall that big actors, directors and producers are seeing the county and surroundings for what they are and really showing it off in the amazing films!
So if you fancy something family orientated but full of adventure, mystery or just to see Cornwall in its all its glory – watch this film, you won’t be disappointed!
